oral hygiene

topic posted Sun, March 23, 2008 - 3:12 PM by  Gretel
Any theories on why some seemingly intelligent people obviously don't brush their f-ing teeth? Why, why, why?

I met a guy like this the other day at a really cool event, and I was just amazed at how he didn't notice (or didn't care) that he had all that nasty sh*t caked on his teeth. Hell is dirty people.

    No shit, thats nasty!

I am into extreme sports and have had a more than my share of teeth knocked out. My dentist gets enough money from me to let my pearlys rot.

I used to have a friend who was very vain, checking his hair/look in every reflective surface etc. But his teeth looked like there was a layer of green fur on them and when he opened his mouth it smelled like he just ate a shit sandwich. Whats up with these people?

I am tactful, heres how to help them

Hand them a mint. If they say "No, thank you." Tell them you weren't offering, you were demanding they eat one.

I am also more rude than that but figured you would want to work up to be as crass as I.

OMFG!! Ms. Purity - that tribe just scared me so bad that I'm gonna go brush my teeth right NOW...and not stop until tomorrow morning! I am so scared of ever needing some of those painful procedures, that I think I would rather just get false teeth in one quick-and-painful go!

then my tribe has worked! I'm happy if I just scare one person into taking care of their teeth.

The guy I'm seeing doesn't brush his teeth as often as I think he should. He never had bad breath and his teeth seem healthy but sometimes he spends the night and we're together the whole next day and he doesn't brush them. I tried to give him a brand-new-in-the-package toothbrush to keep at my place but he wouldn't touch it.

It doesn't seem to be a problem now, but what if we're together long-term? It's not looking likely but what if? I don't want him having to take his teeth out and slip them in the pillow case at night at the ripe old age of 45! (You laugh, but my mom actually divorced a man for doing this very thing)

WTF? Could it be a French thing? Anyone know?

Non-brushers are a show-stopper for me. Just thinking of it gives me the willies. I mean, it's one thing to not brush for a day or so because you're camping or have an excuse, but when there's perfectly good toothbrushes and toothpaste available...

There must be some kind of rash of non-brushers, too - I've had people comment about how much I brush and/or floss and, to me, it's not that much - once in the morning, once at night.

I don't understand it - why skip something so easy and pay for it later? Not to mention the halitosis potential?

Haha, apparently, Alana did a lot of shitfaced posting last night. Not at all bad, I must say. In fact, she did quite well for a drunk girl. ;)

I once posted a bunch of crap on another forum while on Ambien. Luckily, it was pretty much 100% anonymous hehe.

Was I so obviously shitfaced?! LOL I'm sober as a church girl tonight. The past week of drunken debauchery is starting to catch up with me. *groan*

No, actually, it wasn't at all obvious. (I was just effing w/you) ;) If you hadn't mentioned it, I would have been none the wiser. (Apparently, you're an articulate drunk.) :)

In response to "sober as a church girl" - One of my classmates in high school's mom forced her to go to church early Sunday morning after a weekend of HARD (and underaged) partying. She was so drunk / sick / sleepy that she actually had diarrhea and pooped all over herself in church - in WHITE dress pants no less! This embarrassing and disruptive (so I am told) event took place at *the* Baptist church in a gossipy, mostly-Baptist town - so the girl NEVER lived it down.

To this day, when I think of her, I only remember how she crapped on herself at church. I wasn't even there at the time, and I still regret that I missed out on all the excitement. [Unfortunately, I went to the small, not-so-gossipy Catholic Church in town, where people were at least smart enough to get drunk AT church and then go home to poop (they drank wine in mass, and sold shitloads of alcohol at the after-mass bingo)].

On the topic of general 'hippie hygiene', self-grooming based on the standpoint that we are essentially animals and that it 'takes a lot of effort to care', my hippie world is one based on hedonism and therefore entails the joys of cleaning one's self and being clean, being self-conscious not out of self-obsession but out of self love and out of love for others, creating sweet fragrant moments of closeness...

Yes, the beauty industry tries to make us overthink every single self-grooming ritual we have, tries to make us worry about how we look and smell, but in the development of consciousness, I believe self-consciousness is part of the process - a freedom to propel ourselves into the world at our best, providing a clear reflection for those individuals we might like to meet.

OMG Blue! Is he lazy in other aspects of his life? I mean, are there piles of dirty dishes/clothes all over his apt? Does he wear the same dirty jeans every day? My guess is that he's just like some other mysterious non-brushers - normal in every way except for the non-brushing thing. A total enigma.

I'm with kc - I don't get it either, especially considering the dental- and social fallout that nonbrushing can lead to. Maybe it's a living-for-the-moment-and-not-scared-of-the-consequences kind of thing? I'm pretty spontaneous and not a big planner, but damn, I brush my teeth.
